Local SEO Performance Patterns Across Industries: What We've Learned Managing Hundreds of Google Business Profiles
Research by Rank Rise Studio
Local SEO isn't one-size-fits-all. While every business relies on Google Search and Google Maps to connect with potential customers, the strategies that consistently improve visibility often vary by industry. After working with more than 600 businesses and optimizing 500+ Google Business Profiles across 34 U.S. states, Canada, and Ireland, we've identified several recurring patterns that help businesses improve their local search performance.
This report summarizes observations from our ongoing Google Business Profile management work. While every business and market is unique, these are the strategies we consistently see contributing to stronger local visibility across many industries.
Industries Included in This Research
The findings below are based primarily on our work with businesses in the following industries:
Barbershops
Professional Organizers
Home Service Businesses (including painters and power washing companies)
Photographers
Estheticians and Beauty Professionals
Counselors and Medical Practices
Real Estate Professionals
Travel Advisors
Although each industry has its own customer behavior and level of competition, several common themes continue to emerge.
Pattern #1: Complete Google Business Profiles Consistently Perform Better
One of the most common differences between businesses that perform well in Google Maps and those that struggle is the overall completeness of their Google Business Profile.
High-performing profiles typically include:
Complete business information
Accurate business categories
Fully developed service lists
Detailed business descriptions
High-quality photos including logo and cover photo
Regular profile updates
Current business hours
Well-organized products or services where appropriate
Completing every relevant section helps Google better understand what a business offers while giving potential customers more confidence before contacting the business.
The goal is not simply to fill every field - it is to provide useful, accurate information that reflects how customers actually search.
Pattern #2: Strategic Keyword Usage Matters More Than Keyword Stuffing
Businesses often ask whether they should add as many keywords as possible to their Google Business Profile.
Our experience suggests the opposite.
The strongest-performing profiles typically use keywords naturally throughout the profile rather than forcing them into every section.
Instead of repeating the same phrase multiple times, successful profiles clearly explain:
What the business does
Who it serves
Which services it specializes in
Where it operates
When profile content mirrors the language real customers use, it tends to create a stronger user experience while helping Google better understand the business.
Natural, helpful content consistently outperforms content written only for search engines.
Pattern #3: Competitive Research Reveals Hidden Opportunities
One of the most valuable parts of our optimization process is comparing each client's Google Business Profile with other businesses already ranking well in their local market.
Rather than copying competitors, we look for opportunities where our client may be missing important information or customer signals.
Areas we commonly evaluate include:
Primary and secondary business categories
Services offered
Business descriptions
Photos and videos
Customer reviews
Google Posts
Questions and Answers
Overall profile completeness
Customer engagement
This comparison often uncovers simple improvements that help businesses become more competitive within their local market.
Pattern #4: Consistent Posting Builds Stronger Profiles
Google Business Profile posts continue to play an important role in keeping profiles active and informative.
Rather than publishing promotional content alone, we've found greater value in creating posts that answer the questions customers are already asking.
Today, many consumers use AI-powered search tools and conversational search to find businesses.
That means content should answer questions such as:
How long does the service take?
What should customers expect?
What's included?
Who is this service best for?
What problems does it solve?
How should customers prepare?
Helpful content supports both traditional local search and the growing use of AI-assisted search experiences.
Pattern #5: Review Quality Is Just as Important as Review Quantity
Reviews remain one of the strongest trust signals for both customers and local search.
However, we've observed that successful review strategies focus on more than simply collecting the highest number of reviews.
Businesses that consistently perform well often receive reviews that naturally describe:
Specific services provided
Customer experience
Staff interactions
Professionalism
Communication
Location
Results
Reviews that have photos uploaded with them are even more valuable, as they reinforce that the customer really had an interaction with the business. (Caution on this, while they are very important & I encourage requesting them - they are also not able to be removed by the business owner)
These detailed reviews provide valuable information for future customers while also giving Google additional context about the business.
Equally important is understanding how a business compares with its local competitors.
For some industries, 75 reviews may place a business among the leaders.
In other markets, competitors may already have several hundred.
Effective review goals should always consider the local competitive landscape rather than relying on a single benchmark.
Industry Observations
Although every market differs, several trends have appeared repeatedly.
Barbers
Profiles with frequent photo updates, examples of recent work, and reviews mentioning specific haircut styles or services often build stronger customer confidence. The vibes and energy of the location is also important.
Professional Organizers
Businesses that clearly explain their services and answer common customer questions tend to improve engagement and attract more qualified inquiries. It is important for organizers to also describe their personal style, as well as any unique services they offer like unpacking, move management, etc.
Home Service Businesses
Painters, power washing companies, and similar businesses benefit from before-and-after project photos, service-area clarity, and reviews that describe completed projects. Before and after photos need to be edited into one graphic as Google can separate them. It is also important to show that you work clean and with minimal disruption to the home owner (shoe covers, tarps etc. ) so clients know what type of experience to expect.
Photographers
High-quality portfolio images combined with detailed service descriptions help demonstrate expertise before a customer ever visits the website. Behind the scenes photos are very important for the customer to see the experience as well as the final product.
Estheticians
Profiles featuring treatment information, frequently updated photos, and educational content often create stronger customer engagement. Clients also want to see the provider & the space, so they know what type of experience to expect.
Counselors and Medical Practices
Complete service information, accurate categories, and trust-building reviews help patients feel more confident when choosing a provider. As reviews can be difficult to get, creating graphics with anonymous reviews can help.
Real Estate Professionals
Consistent profile updates, local market expertise, and reviews describing successful transactions help strengthen visibility and credibility.
Travel Advisors
Profiles answering common travel planning questions while showcasing destinations and client experiences often perform well in local search. Showing what you do to help clients is important, as well as seeing that clients return to you for their other trips builds trust.
Key Takeaways
Across every industry we manage, one lesson remains consistent:
Businesses that treat their Google Business Profile as an actively managed marketing asset generally achieve stronger local visibility than businesses that create a profile and leave it unchanged.
The profiles showing the strongest long-term performance typically have four things in common:
Complete, well-maintained business information
Helpful content written for customers rather than search engines
Ongoing competitor analysis and optimization
A consistent strategy for earning detailed, high-quality customer reviews
As Google Search continues to evolve alongside AI-powered search experiences, businesses that prioritize useful information, trust, and consistency are well positioned to remain visible where customers are searching.
